Skin Rejuvenation with Botox® Cosmetic, Chemical Peel, Microdermabrasion, and More – Atlanta

Chemical Peel

A Chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove the damaged outer epidermal layers. Phenol, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are the chemicals typically used. Chemical peel may be performed in conjunction with a facelift. A facelift, in conjunction with a peel, can remove facial folds, fine wrinkles, and any facial discolorations.

Botox® Injections

Frown lines, crow's feet and other facial wrinkles often combine to make a person look older and more tired. Botox®, a purified form of botulinum toxin recently approved by the FDA, is an excellent way to treat facial wrinkles. These wrinkles are caused by contraction of the underlying muscles. To remove these wrinkles, Botox® is injected through a very small needle in minute amounts into the muscles that cause these contractions. The Botox® treatment is performed in 10 to 15 minutes in Dr. John LeRoy's Atlanta office. There is no recovery time and the procedure can easily be performed during the lunch hour.

Botox® reduces wrinkles caused by contracting corrugator and procerus muscles by inhibiting nerve signals that cause the muscles to become tense. Botox®, or "botulinum toxin", was first used to treat strabismus and blepharospasm (eye conditions), and cervical dystocia (a neck muscle condition). Botulinum toxin blocks the chemical acetylcholine, and thus calms spasmodic muscles. It was found that botulinum toxin relaxed frown lines in these patients, and soon it became a highly sought treatment for cosmetic patients.

The Botox® procedure takes about ten minutes to perform and does not require the patient to take time off for recovery. Dr. LeRoy will take account of all medicines the patient uses and any allergies he or she may have. During the procedure Atlanta cosmetic surgeon Dr. LeRoy will ask the patient to make various expressions - such as frowns and squints - in order to locate the contraction points in his or her browline. Dr. LeRoy will inject these points with Botox®. The muscles will relax within a week and the patient will look rested and significantly less stressed.

Botox® temporarily paralyzes muscles; to maintain results a patient must receive treatment every three to four months. To date there is no evidence that continuing Botox® treatment destroys muscles - but it has been found that the length of time that Botox® is effective lengthens with repeated treatments. Microdermabrasion – Parisian Peel

Microdermabrasion is a skin renewal process used to treat acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and oily and clogged pores. The tool used for microdermabrasion exfoliates with abrasive crystals, and lifts dead skin cells with focused suction. Treatments are done in a regular series for the greatest results. Fresh skin is revealed at each layer, but healing time must be allowed between treatments. The number of treatments needed depends on how superficial skin damage is. Wrinkles, for instance may require more treatment than clogged pores.

Before microdermabrasion, Atlanta cosmetic surgeon Dr. John LeRoy will prepare the patient's face with an antioxidant gel. Once the skin is prepared the doctor will use a handheld tool that focuses suction and abrasion into a small, round area. In the course of twenty to forty minutes the entire face will be treated and a new, fresh level of skin will be visible. The patient will not need any recovery "down time", but he or she will be required to wear sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight as the skin begins to heal.

After microdermabrasion a patient's face will be pinkish and sensitive for about two days. Within a few days normal coloration will return, minus surface skin damage. Microdermabrasion may be repeated every two to three weeks, and most patients reach optimal skin condition within five to ten treatments. In combination with a regular skin care routine, microdermabrasion can restore health to damaged skin. If you are interested in microdermabrasion, contact Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. John LeRoy.

Laser Resurfacing of Facial Skin

In laser resurfacing, sometimes called "laser peel", areas of damaged or wrinkled skin are removed, layer by layer. The procedure is most commonly used to minimize the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. However, it is also effective in areas of uneven pigmentation. Laser resurfacing may be performed on the whole face or in specific regions.
