Facelift in Atlanta

Curious about facelift facial plastic surgery? Contact Dr. LeRoy of Atlanta, Georgia. Facelift is a cosmetic procedure that counteracts the effects of aging and sun exposure by tightening the skin around the face and neck. The procedure leaves little visible scarring and smoothes wrinkles and pockets of droopiness. The facelift procedure targets the lower half of the face, specifically the cheeks, mouth, and jawline. Other facial plastic surgery procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), browlift, and necklift smooth skin on other areas of the face. The results of facelift are not permanent, as the skin continues to age, but the procedure can be expected to slow the appearance of aging in the face. Those who will experience the greatest success through the facelift procedure have good general health, do not smoke, and have elasticity in their skin.

During the facelift procedure skin is lifted, excess fat and tissue are removed, and skin is redraped over the face. Incisions run, on each side of the face, from the temple to the nape of the neck. Scarring will, for the most part, be hidden within the hair of the patient, but a fine line will trace in front of the ear and around the earlobe. During the procedure, Atlanta facelift surgeon Dr. John LeRoy lifts facial skin from the muscle beneath. The muscle will often be tightened and fat pockets will be trimmed or suctioned away. Skin is relaid over the face and any excess is trimmed away from the original incision line within the hair and along the ear. The incision is closed with stitches and, if necessary, metal clips. Small drainage tubes may be placed under the skin behind the ears to remove excess fluid.

After facelift surgery in Atlanta, a patient can expect to feel slight discomfort for a number of days. Bandages will be used to minimize swelling after facelift surgery. These bandages and any drainage tubes will be removed a day or two after surgery; within a week stitches and clips will be removed. Most patients of our Atlanta clinic return to work two weeks after their facelift surgery. The results of a facelift will not be apparent immediately, as the skin needs time to heal, but as the effects of surgery fade, results will become apparent. It is generally agreed that the facelift procedure lifts 5-10 years from a patient's face and, though results are not permanent, patients who have had the procedure generally continue to look younger than their age. Mini Face Lift in Atlanta - Band-Aid Facelift

Not ready for a full face-lift procedure? Consider the "Band-Aid" mini facelift performed exclusively by Atlanta facelift surgeon Dr. John Leroy. The mini facelift utilizes smaller incisions and has a reduced recovery period. The "Band-Aid" facelift reduces smile lines giving you a refreshing younger appearance.

The mini face lift, often called the "weekend facelift", decreases signs of aging in the neck and jaw areas of the face. The procedure is simpler than a standard facelift, and recovery time is significantly reduced. Mini facelift can be performed through a small incision under the chin, by incisions directly above the ears, or by incisions running behind the ears and into the nape of the neck. The different approaches target different "problems" in the face.

The first mini facelift procedure (that performed under the chin) is the simplest and the most effective if the patient's goal is simply to remove excess fat in the neck and jaw area. During the procedure liposuction is performed through an incision under the chin, skin is tightened inwardly through laser treatment, and muscles are tightened with sutures. The procedure best benefits those with elasticity in their skin, as little surgical tightening of skin occurs. Patients of our Atlanta office recover quickly from this form of mini facelift, and can have more extensive procedures performed at a later time if they choose.

The second mini facelift procedure, the "anterior" mini facelift, targets the chin, jawline, and lower cheeks. Skin is lifted and re-laid along the cheeks and jaws. Fatty deposits may be removed or repositioned and excess skin is tightened through an incision that runs in front of the ears, and into the scalp. A patient will usually recover from an anterior facelift within a week, and discomfort is significantly less intense for anterior mini facelift patients than it is for traditional facelift patients.

The "posterior" mini facelift procedure tightens skin in the jowls and neck. The incisions run low, behind a patient's ears and into the nape of his or her neck. Skin is lifted and re-laid along the neck and lower jowls, and excess skin is removed along the incision line. Recovery from a posterior mini facelift is similar to recovery from an anterior mini facelift.

Mini facelift procedures carry fewer risks than traditional facelift procedures because they are less invasive and can be performed under local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. The results of mini facelifts are not as long-lasting as those of traditional facelifts, but for patients in the Atlanta area looking for a quick and subtle change, mini facelifts carry great appeal. Collagen, Dermalogen and Fat Injections

Laugh lines, smile lines, crow's feet, or facial creases occur over the areas of muscle movement. Soft-tissue fillers, most commonly injectable collagen or fat, can help fill in these lines and creases; this temporarily restores a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. These soft-tissue fillers can also add fullness to the lips and cheeks. Injectable fillers may be used alone or in conjunction with either a skin resurfacing or skin-removing procedure.

Collagen is a structuring protein that supports tissue. Injectable collagen is made from bovine collagen and is marketed under the brand names Zyderm and Zyplast. The effects of collagen injections usually last between three and six months, so patients usually make collagen treatments part of their cosmetic routine. The risks of collagen injections are slight, as the procedure is non-surgical, but patients should be aware that collagen may cause an allergic reaction. Prior to collagen treatment in Atlanta, a patient will be tested for allergies. If he or she is allergic to bovine derived collagen, a fat injection procedure such as microlipoinjection may be used.

Collagen is injected in a series of points at the targeted area. The injections are made just beneath the skin's surface, as effects are most visible at this level. Extra volume will be added as the collagen is combined with a saline solution. The Atlanta collagen patient is fully cognizant during the procedure and may offer input as to how much collagen should be used. The procedure takes less than and hour and requires no recovery period. Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head, or to change the shape or reduce the size of large ears. This is commonly referred to as ear pinning.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, or "blepharoplasty", is a procedure that makes eyes look alert and rested by removing pockets of sagging from the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure is relatively simple and scarring is minimal. Many patients of our Atlanta clinic choose eyelid surgery because its effects are subtle, yet effective. Patients look younger, more alert, and more cheerful, but do not look as though they have had surgery. The results of blepharoplasty are often permanent although the skin does continue to age. For total eye rejuvenation, patients often combine blepharoplasty with laser skin resurfacing - to lighten dark circles - and browlift - to raise eyebrows and smooth the skin on the forehead.

Eyelid surgery may be performed on the upper and lower eyelids. Before scheduling eyelid surgery in Atlanta, eyelid surgeon Dr. John LeRoy will review the patient's medical and vision history, perform an eye exam and a tear production test, and ask the patient to explain, in detail, what changes he or she would like to see.

If a patient is unsatisfied with drooping upper eyelids, Dr. LeRoy will perform a procedure in which fatty tissue and some skin are removed from the crease in the upper eyelid. This technique removes sagging skin and thus makes eyes look more open. Incisions are hidden in the crease of the eyelid. If the patient is concerned with fatty pouches under the eyes, Dr. LeRoy will use one of two techniques. The first technique removes both fat and skin from the lower eyelids through a slight incision in the lash line. Fat is removed and skin is tightened along this incision that follows the lash line into the smile wrinkles. The second technique, transconjunctival blepharoplasty, removes fatty tissue, but leaves eyelid skin intact. An incision is made from the inside of the lower eyelid, fat is removed with thin forceps, and dissolving sutures are used to close the incision. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty works best for younger patients or for patients with generous elasticity in their skin.

Eyelid surgery is normally performed on an outpatient basis and the entire procedure takes less than three hours. Atlanta eyelid surgery patients should expect to spend the days following surgery resting and limiting physical activities. Within ten days most eyelid surgery patients are able to return to work, and within four weeks most swelling and bruising will have subsided. Eyelid surgery is considered a safe procedure when performed by a qualified eyelid surgeon, but the recovery process must be closely monitored in case of any complications. Scars along incision lines may remain pink during the months following surgery - but, given time, they will fade and become virtually imperceptible. Facial Implants of the Cheeks, Chin, and Jaw

Plastic surgeons use facial implants to improve and enhance facial contours. They may help strengthen a jawline or bring the chin or cheekbones into balance with the rest of the face.

Browlift

A browlift, or "forehead lift" can smooth away the etchings of stress, sun exposure, and age across the forehead while recreating lost arches in the eyebrows. Both "open" browlift and endoscopic browlift procedures are available to cosmetic surgery patients in Atlanta, and incisions may be hidden at various places on the scalp. The results of a browlift usually last years.

Open Browlift

During an open browlift, an incision is usually made from behind one ear, over the top of the head, to behind the other ear. The incision line passes through the hair on the scalp. From the incision line the Atlanta browlift surgeon Dr. John LeRoy will lift the forehead skin, remove underlying bulges of tissue, and adjust the tension in the forehead muscles. The eyebrows may also be moved to a higher point along the brow bone. After relaying the skin on the forehead Dr. LeRoy will trim excess skin along the incision line and close the scalp with stitches and metal clips. The "open" browlift procedure can be manipulated to serve bald patients or patients with thinning hair. The incision line will be moved. Sometimes it will be placed directly in front of the hairline (so the forehead is not raised) and at other times it will be placed in the middle of the scalp, so scarring blends into the natural creases of the skull bones.

Endoscopic Browlift

The endoscopic browlift procedure is less invasive than the "open" browlift procedure, lifting skin through small slits instead of along a long line. Atlanta browlift surgeon Dr. LeRoy views areas of unevenness under the skin of the forehead through the use of an endoscope. This tool, about the size of a pencil, is attached to a monitor. Dr. LeRoy then trims and smoothes tissue through separate incisions. Once the underlying muscle and tissue beneath the skin of the forehead have been evened out and relaxed, and any adjustments to the level of the eyebrows have been made, Dr. LeRoy will close the incision points. The endoscopic browlift procedure is not as extensive as the open browlift, but the technique allows for an easier recovery and leaves less scarring.

Recovery from endoscopic browlift is easier than recovery from open browlift. Open browlift patients in Atlanta should expect swelling in the weeks after surgery and itchiness along the incision line as the skin begins to heal. The shock of surgery to the hair follicles along the incision may cause temporary hair loss. Open browlift patients should be able to return to work ten days after surgery. Endoscopic browlift patients in Atlanta will not experience swelling, itchiness, and hair loss to the same extent as open browlift patients. They should also be able to return to their normal routines sooner. Within a month the results of the forehead lift procedure should be apparent.
